“The annual commemoration of the anniversary of the Battle of Hradec Králové is the largest event of its kind
in the Hradec Králové Region and one of the largest in the whole country. Most of the combat clashes of the Austro-Prussian War took place in the territory of today's Hradec Králové Region and are inseparably connected with the region. We understand these circumstances as an obligation to the past, but thanks to tourism also as a great opportunity for the future. The importance of this sector of the economy is constantly growing. In the case of the 160th anniversary of these historical events, we expect truly enormous public interest, not only Czech, but also foreign,” said Petr Koleta, Governor of the Hradec Králové Region.
“In the immediate vicinity of our city took place the largest field battle on the territory of the Czech lands, a battle associated with massacre and immense human suffering. It was precisely this battle within the Austro-Prussian War that influenced further development throughout Europe. And although one hundred and sixty years is a long time, the legacy of 1866 remains very much alive. It reminds us of the value of peace, courage and the sacrifices of thousands of people. I am glad that we can remember this important chapter of history with respect, reverence and dignity,” adds Pavlína Springerová, Mayor of the City of Hradec Králové.
“We are aware of the great importance not only of the battle itself for the history of Europe, but also of the significance of the 160th anniversary
for the Hradec Králové region. We are preparing a range of events that will recall not only historical events,
but will also provide opportunities for meetings of important personalities of cultural, professional and social life. We are also pleased that all involved entities share a consensus on an intensive approach, which is important for the success of this demanding project,” noted Radek Balcárek, director of the Königgrätz 1866 project.
The programme of commemorative events will offer a wide range of opportunities to remember this important event. In addition to the already traditional battle demonstrations at Chlum and in the surrounding area, there will be, for example, an international conference, commemorative acts, the opening of a new exhibition at the War Museum in Chlum, concerts and a cultural programme in the centre of Hradec Králové. The total budget will reach 5 million CZK.
