Signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation for the 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Königgrätz (1866) Events

On Wednesday, January 21, 2026, representatives of the Hradec Králové Region, the Statutory City of Hradec Králové, the University of Hradec Králové, the City Guard of Hradec Králové, Committee 1866, and the Museum of Eastern Bohemia met in the museum's historic building to formally sign a Memorandum of Cooperation. This document outlines the joint organization of events marking the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Königgrätz (1866). The memorandum had previously been approved by the assemblies of both the Hradec Králové Region and the City of Hradec Králové. This agreement serves as the foundation for the program and budget of a series of commemorative events dedicated to this pivotal 19th-century battle. The scope of the 2026 events will build upon previous major anniversaries in 1996, 2006, and 2016, which were primarily organized by the City Guard of Hradec Králové.

"The annual commemoration of the Battle of Königgrätz is the largest event of its kind in the Hradec Králové Region and one of the largest in the entire country. Most of the military engagements of the Austro-Prussian War took place within our region and are intrinsically linked to it. We view these circumstances as a commitment to the past, but also, through tourism, as a great opportunity for the future. The importance of this economic sector is constantly growing. For the 160th anniversary, we expect enormous public interest from both domestic and international visitors," stated Petr Koleta, Governor of the Hradec Králové Region.

"The largest field battle on Czech soil, marked by massacre and immense human suffering, took place in the immediate vicinity of our city. This particular battle of the Austro-Prussian War influenced the subsequent development of all of Europe. Although 160 years is a long time, the legacy of 1866 remains alive. It reminds us of the value of peace, courage, and the sacrifices of thousands. I am pleased that we can commemorate this significant chapter of history with honor, respect, and dignity," added Pavlína Springerová, Mayor of Hradec Králové.

"We are aware of the great significance of the battle itself for European history, as well as the importance of the 160th anniversary for the Hradec Králové region. We are preparing a series of events that will not only recall historical events but also provide an opportunity for meetings between prominent figures in cultural, professional, and social life. We are also pleased that there is a consensus among all stakeholders regarding the intensive approach necessary for the success of this demanding project," noted Radek Balcárek, Director of the Königgrätz 1866 Project.

The commemorative program will offer a wide range of activities. In addition to the traditional battle reenactments at Chlum and the surrounding areas, there will be an international conference, commemorative acts, the opening of a new exhibition at the War Museum at Chlum, concerts, and a cultural program in the center of Hradec Králové. The total budget will reach 5 million CZK.
